NAIROBI, Kenya- Detectives investigating the murder of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso have arrested two more suspects, including a serving police officer, in what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in the high-profile case.
Investigators say the latest arrests have significantly advanced the probe, with evidence recovered linking the suspects to the fatal shooting that occurred in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area last week.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is, however, continuing to pursue additional suspects believed to have played different roles in the killing.
Among the items recovered during the operation was a pistol suspected to have been used in the attack.
The firearm has been forwarded for ballistic examination to establish whether it was used in Dr Mutiso’s murder or any other criminal incidents.
Detectives also recovered the motorcycle believed to have transported the gunman to the scene.
According to investigators, forensic and investigative findings place the motorcycle at the location where the psychologist was fatally shot.
Police further seized a Toyota Prado that is believed to have been used to obstruct the taxi carrying Dr Mutiso moments before the attack, allowing the assailants to execute the shooting.
The second suspect arrested is a motorcycle rider alleged to have ferried the gunman before and after the attack.
Investigators are also examining possible links between the killing of Dr Mutiso and the fatal shooting of advocate Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down at close range along Magadi Road in September last year.
Mbobu had previously represented Dr Mutiso in legal matters, and detectives believe the two murders may have been carried out by the same criminal network.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin is expected to provide an update on the investigation during a press briefing scheduled for Friday.
Sources familiar with the investigation indicated that the latest arrests could help resolve several other unsolved murder cases currently under investigation.
The two arrests add to four other suspects already in custody over Dr Mutiso’s killing. Those previously arrested include a woman, her two children and a former Member of the County Assembly, all of whom remain under investigation.
Meanwhile, the family of Dr Mutiso is preparing for her burial as investigations continue.
In a related development, a Nairobi court ordered advocate Angela Mulwa and Nelson Masiga to remain in custody for 14 days to allow detectives to complete investigations into the alleged theft of motor vehicles said to belong to the slain psychologist.
The two are being investigated over the suspected theft and handling of property linked to Dr Mutiso. Detectives are examining whether the alleged theft is connected to the broader murder investigation.
Dr Mutiso, a respected clinical psychologist and mental health researcher, was shot dead last week in a case that has drawn widespread public attention and prompted an extensive investigation involving multiple agencies and several lines of inquiry.
