Raila Odinga: One Feared Dead After Kasarani’s Chaos

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- A tragic development has been reported at Kasarani Stadium, where chaos erupted as security forces attempted to control the massive crowd gathered to view the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Reports indicate that at least one person has died, in addition to several others injured, after police lobbed teargas canisters and fired gunshots to disperse the surging crowd.

The General Service Unit officers were seen forcefully dispersing the thousands of passionate mourners who had overwhelmed security, leading to a near-stampede at the stadium’s entrance as the vehicle carrying Odinga’s body arrived.

The public viewing was moved to Kasarani from Parliament Buildings at the last minute to manage the huge turnout, but the move failed to prevent the outbreak of violence as mourners grew impatient.

President William Ruto and other top government officials are at the venue for the official state viewing ceremony.

The body of the former Prime Minister was repatriated from India earlier this morning, marking the start of a series of national events honoring him.
