‘Reconsider Your Trip’: US Raises Alarm Over Security Risks in Tanzania

Date:

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – The United States has warned its citizens against nonessential travel to Tanzania, citing rising concerns over unrest, crime, terrorism, and threats to LGBTQ+ individuals.

In a Level 3 advisory issued on Friday, the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam urged Americans to “reconsider travel” to the country, warning that political demonstrations, violent crime, and incidents of harassment could pose serious risks to visitors.

“Reconsider travel to Tanzania due to unrest, crime, terrorism, and targeting of gay and lesbian individuals. Some areas have increased risk,” the advisory stated.

The Embassy noted that protests in Tanzania can erupt with little warning in response to political or economic developments.

It said authorities have heightened security in some areas through roadblocks, checkpoints, and visible police patrols — measures that rights groups have criticized as restricting freedom of assembly.

The advisory added that violent crime, including assault, robbery, sexual assault, and carjacking, has been reported in parts of the country, with police often unable to respond effectively due to limited resources.

Travellers were urged to remain alert, avoid walking alone at night, and exercise caution even in tourist hotspots.

The U.S. also warned of a continuing terrorist threat, particularly in the southern Mtwara Region bordering Mozambique, where extremist activity has been reported in recent years.

Potential targets include public spaces, government facilities, and popular tourist sites.

The advisory specifically flagged risks for LGBTQ+ travellers, noting reports of harassment and discrimination.

“Individuals who identify as gay or lesbian may face targeting,” it said, advising discretion and avoidance of public displays of affection.

The Embassy recommended that U.S. citizens enroll in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and updates, have an emergency evacuation plan, and monitor local news for security developments.

Tanzania’s inclusion in the Level 3 category places it among countries where the U.S. government strongly discourages nonessential travel.

The advisory comes amid reports of unrest following Tanzania’s general elections held earlier this week.
