Security Bosses Convene Over Escalating Unrest in Schools

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya’s top security officials are expected to meet on Monday, June 8, to address a growing crisis of student unrest and dormitory fires that has disrupted learning in secondary schools across the country.

The high-level meeting comes amid a wave of incidents that has forced the closure of more than 60 secondary schools in Nairobi, Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza, and the Mt Kenya regions.

The crisis escalated following a deadly midnight fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, which claimed the lives of 16 students and left 79 others injured. The tragedy has intensified concerns over safety and discipline in learning institutions.

Several prestigious national schools have also been affected by the unrest, with reports of heightened tensions and attempted arson prompting the closure of institutions including Alliance High School, Nairobi School, Lenana School, and Loreto High School Limuru.

Authorities have already taken legal action over the Gilgil incident, with nine students from Utumishi Girls Academy arraigned before the Naivasha Law Courts on arson-related charges.

According to preliminary reports from the Ministry of Education and security agencies, the unrest is being driven by a combination of factors, including academic pressure, disciplinary disputes, and broader social tensions.

Officials say anxiety linked to upcoming national examinations has placed significant emotional strain on students, while communication breakdowns between learners and school administrations over school conditions have further fueled discontent.

The situation has also unfolded against the backdrop of a nationwide matatu strike sparked by rising fuel prices, which authorities believe may have compounded tensions in some areas.

In response, the government has ruled out an early school holiday. Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said the academic calendar will remain unchanged despite the disruptions.

The Ministry of Education, working alongside regional administrators and security agencies, has announced a series of measures aimed at restoring stability. These include the installation of CCTV surveillance systems in schools, enhanced investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and efforts to identify those responsible for the unrest.

School administrations have also been directed to adopt more consultative leadership approaches, strengthen guidance and counselling programmes, and address student grievances promptly to prevent further incidents.

The meeting of security officials is expected to outline additional interventions as authorities seek to contain the crisis and safeguard learners across the country.
