NAIROBI, Kenya- Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has resigned as Chair of the Council of the Ukombozi Alliance, the coalition formerly known as Azimio la Umoja One Kenya.
Ukombozi Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka said the coalition received Kenyatta’s letter dated October 5, in which he “resigns from his leadership position within the coalition with immediate effect.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kalonzo thanked Kenyatta for leading the coalition and said the decision did not end their political partnership.
He said Kenyatta had described the coalition as a lasting commitment and urged its leaders to keep it open to Kenyans who support the rule of law and democratic governance.
Kalonzo said the council chair and party leader are separate offices.
The council chair provides guidance and convenes the coalition’s council, while the party leader heads the party politically and executive-wise, runs its daily affairs and represents it before institutions.
He said his position as party leader was not affected by Kenyatta’s resignation and that there was no leadership vacuum.
The Wiper Leader said there would be “no change in the party’s leadership, direction or programme.”
Handover visit planned
Kalonzo said Kenyatta remained part of the coalition and was ready to support it from the ranks.
He said Ukombozi would invite the former president for an official visit during which a handover ceremony would take place.
The resignation comes after Kenyatta led the Azimio coalition through a major transition.
On September 21, coalition leaders announced that Azimio had rebranded as the Ukombozi Alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo also said the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties had reserved the name The Ukombozi Alliance for the coalition.
He said the party was completing the required compliance steps and would update the public as it reached further milestones.
