HOMA BAY, Kenya – Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga on Monday escalated her ongoing feud with her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, by sacking him from his role as County Agriculture and Livestock Minister.
Magwanga, a former Kasipul Constituency MP and Wanga’s deputy since the 2022 General Election, was dismissed alongside Peter Ogolla, who served as Lands and Physical Planning Minister.
The two will be replaced by Danish Onyango and Joseph Mitito, respectively, according to a letter seen by The Eastleigh Voice.
The fallout comes in the wake of last week’s Kasipul parliamentary by-election, where Magwanga campaigned for Independent candidate Philip Aroko, defying Wanga who was leading campaigns for the ODM flag bearer, Boyd Were.
Speaking at a rally prior to the by-election, Governor Wanga had issued a sharp warning to dissenting county officials.
“Someone cannot be working in your administration and speaking ill of the same administration because getting to be the leader of a government is very difficult,” Wanga said, stressing that loyalty and discipline were non-negotiable.
She recounted the personal sacrifices she made to ascend to the county leadership, noting she had traversed the county and even used her own resources to secure the governorship.
“If I employ you to work in this government, then you must work per the regulations,” she added.
Wanga further emphasized that internal disagreements would no longer be tolerated.
“Anyone who does not want to work in my government will be forced to resign, and I will allocate those positions to others,” she declared.
The dismissals signal a widening rift within Homa Bay County leadership, raising questions about the stability of the administration ahead of upcoming political contests.
