BUNGOMA, Kenya — Veteran politician Moses Wetang’ula on Thursday morning cast his ballot at Namakhele Primary School in the Chewele–Kabuchai ward by-election, calling on residents to exercise their democratic right in large numbers and urging vigilance against potential election irregularities.
In a statement following his vote, Wetang’ula reassured constituents that adequate security personnel had been deployed across polling stations to guarantee a peaceful electoral environment.
He encouraged voters to come out in strong numbers, emphasising the importance of participating without fear.
“I urge our residents to come out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right without fear,” Wetang’ula said. He added that the presence of security officers should instill confidence and that citizens should promptly report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
The Chewele–Kabuchai by-election comes as part of a wave of mini-polls scheduled across several wards and constituencies, following recent political reshuffles and vacancies.

Election observers and security agencies have already noted heightened tension in the region, prompting a significant deployment of police and administrative officers to maintain order.
With polling underway, the coming hours will test both community resolve and the effectiveness of security arrangements.
As voters queue to cast their ballots, authorities are expected to monitor the process closely to ensure compliance with electoral laws and safeguards set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
