TANA RIVER, Kenya — Communities in Tana North, Tana River County, continue to face the severe effects of drought, with thousands struggling to access food and water.

The Kenya Red Cross, in partnership with local organisation Towfiq Muslim Youth, is providing emergency food assistance to 1,700 drought-affected households in the area.

Despite these efforts, access to safe water remains a critical challenge. Many families are reportedly forced to dig in dry riverbeds to meet their daily water needs, highlighting the scale of the crisis.

“The situation is dire. While food support is reaching some households, water scarcity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods,” said a Kenya Red Cross spokesperson.

The ongoing drought in Tana River County is part of a broader climate-driven crisis affecting arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya, raising concerns over food security, health, and long-term community resilience.

Humanitarian organisations have called for increased support and urgent intervention to provide safe water, sustain food relief, and prevent further deterioration of living conditions.
