NAIROBI, Kenya- The government has apologised for the disruption affecting operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), as efforts continue to resolve the aviation crisis.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 31, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi said the government recognised the serious impact the disruption was having on passengers, airlines, businesses and Kenya’s international connectivity.
“The Government recognises the serious disruption currently affecting operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA),” Mudavadi said.
He said the government was actively engaging all parties involved, with discussions ongoing to address the issues behind the disruption.
Mudavadi said the immediate priority was to facilitate the safe and orderly restoration of normal airport operations while working towards a sustainable resolution.
The government also apologised to passengers whose journeys have been disrupted and urged affected travellers to remain patient and continue liaising with their respective airlines for updates on their flights and travel arrangements.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to passengers whose journeys have been disrupted,” the statement said.
The government described JKIA as a critical national gateway and an important hub for trade, tourism, investment, diplomacy and regional connectivity.
Mudavadi said the government was treating the situation with the urgency and seriousness it required.
He also assured the public, aviation industry and international partners that the government remained engaged with all relevant stakeholders.
“The Government remains fully seized of the matter and will continue engaging all relevant stakeholders in good faith,” Mudavadi said.
The latest statement comes as aviation operations at JKIA remain disrupted amid an ongoing dispute involving aviation workers and air traffic control services.
Airlines have reported significant delays and cancellations, with Kenya Airways warning passengers of delays running into several hours and advising travellers to confirm their flight status before travelling to the airport.
Regional carriers have also issued advisories to passengers affected by the disruption.
The government said it would provide a further update as discussions progress.
