KAKAMEGA, Kenya — National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has joined former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other leaders in calling for a thorough, open, and credible investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.
Speaking at Jirongo’s burial ceremony held at Lumakanda Township Primary School in Lugari Constituency, Wetang’ula said the manner of Jirongo’s death had raised serious national concern and warranted clear, transparent answers from investigators.
“I amplified calls by fellow leaders pushing for a thorough, open and credible investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely death,” Wetang’ula said, addressing thousands of mourners.
The Speaker urged detectives to explain both the process and findings of their investigations in detail, saying transparency was necessary to dispel speculation and restore public confidence.
“As leaders, it was only right that we demand clear answers on the death of the former Lugari MP,” he said. “Investigators must act swiftly and transparently to uncover the truth, end the controversy and give peace to Jirongo’s family, colleagues and supporters.”
Wetang’ula described Jirongo as a close ally and personal friend of more than 38 years, saying his death was a profound loss not only to his family but also to national politics.
He noted that one of the enduring lessons from Jirongo’s political life was the importance of unity within the Luhya community, a cause he said the late politician championed consistently.
“His passing reminds us of the urgent need for unity among our people,” Wetang’ula said.
The burial brought together senior political figures from across the political divide, underscoring Jirongo’s long-standing influence in Kenyan politics.
Among those present were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Opposition leader Martha Karua, Members of Parliament, and Members of County Assemblies.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta also attended the ceremony, joining leaders in paying tribute to Jirongo’s role in national politics and regional leadership.

Jirongo, a prominent businessman and politician, served as Lugari MP and later as a Cabinet minister, remaining an influential figure within the Luhya political sphere for decades.
Investigative agencies have yet to issue a comprehensive public report on the circumstances of his death, a gap that leaders at the burial said was fuelling speculation and anxiety.
As mourners laid Jirongo to rest, calls for accountability and transparency dominated the ceremony, with leaders urging authorities to move quickly to establish the truth and bring closure to a case that has gripped national attention.
