Boost as Siaya County Gov’t Receives Medical Equipment Worth Sh32 Million

Date:

SIAYA, Kenya – The provision of healthcare services is expected to improve in Siaya County after the regional government receives an avalanche of medical consignments.

The equipment, consisting of two X-ray machines, was handed over to the Sigomere Health Centre in Ugunja sub-county and the Akala Health Centre in Gem sub-county.

The two AI-powered, state-of-the-art X-ray machines worth Sh32 million are a boost to healthcare for the Governor James Orengo-led administration, given the dynamics and challenges that continue to plague the health sector. This new development is set to tremendously ensure his blueprint on providing health care for the County.

“In delivering on our maternal and general healthcare services, we continue to undertake partnerships to enhance and improve our healthcare infrastructure,” said Governor Orengo.

In another development, AMREF Africa and World Bicycle Relief donated two hundred and ten (210) bicycles, starting with fifty to be distributed in Alego Usonga, with the rest going to other sub-counties.

The medical consignments include a colposcope machine costing Sh8 million. The medical machine is used for cancer diagnostics, an ultra-sonic machine for numerous health conditions, a microscope, a vortex for use in the laboratory, urine specimen containers, and assorted medical laboratory equipment.

The donations from AMREF are worth Sh18 million and are meant for the Siaya County Referral Hospital, Bondo sub-county, and various health centres dotted across the County.

The mobility bicycles from the World Bicycles Relief will go towards enhancing smooth mobility for Community Health Promoters stationed at different sub-county hospitals. In addition, they will enhance service delivery in areas of maternal healthcare by improving access to and from inpatient support systems in rural areas.

They will also aid in the provision of much-needed services by CHPs, like counselling services.

How the Siaya County government is transforming the healthcare system

Additionally, they could be used for the delivery of medicines for patients who require much attention and are under care from the county health centres.

In early May 2025, Governor Orengo presided over the launch of the foundation stone-laying at Bar Ndege Health Centre and Urenga Sub-County Hospital, where the construction of modern medical facilities has officially commenced.

“This marks a significant step toward transforming our health sector and ensuring access to quality healthcare for every resident, an initiative that reflects our unwavering commitment to building a healthier, stronger generation for Siaya,” explained the county boss.

Siaya County is actively working to improve its healthcare system. The county government focuses on community health, primary care, and disease control, as well as environmental health and health education.

Recent efforts include securing medical equipment to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and increase accessibility. The RMNCAH Act is being implemented to improve healthcare services in the county.
