Governor Wamatangi Says Late Gospel Star Betty Bayo Played Key Role in His Political Rise

Date:

KIAMBU, Kenya — Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has revealed how the late gospel singer Betty Bayo significantly influenced his political journey, from his Senate campaign to his election as county governor.

Speaking at Bayo’s memorial service on Sunday, November 16, 2025, Wamatangi described her as a deeply loyal and committed ally.

“Tulitembea na Betty … tukakata safari mpaka usiku, finally nikapata kiti ya kuwa Senator,” he said, recalling how they supported each other through long, challenging nights of campaigning.

The governor said Betty Bayo’s faithfulness and her respected voice in the gospel community made his own political voice more palatable to voters.

He added that she played a meaningful role during his 2017 re-election bid as well. “The role Betty played to ensure I was accepted … her voice carried weight and helped me get elected. We did the same again in 2017,” he said.

Wamatangi also hailed Bayo as a strong woman who dedicated her time and energy to empowering others — both as an artist and a public servant. Her commitment to his campaigns, he said, came at personal cost and reflected her character and generosity.

Bishop Ben Kiengei, head pastor at JCM and a close friend of Bayo, also paid heartfelt tribute in a post on Facebook. He praised her joyful spirit, her devoted service to God and community, and her consistent dedication to uplifting others through music.

Bayo, born Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, passed away on November 10, 2025, after being diagnosed with advanced-stage leukemia. Her family announced that her burial will take place on November 20 at her land in Mugumo Estate, along Kiambu Road.

Her passing has jolted the gospel and political communities, reminding many of the deep and sometimes underappreciated connections between faith, service, and leadership.
