NAIROBI, Kenya — The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into an alleged case of police assault involving a minor in Narok County.
In a statement issued on Friday, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan said the probe follows reports that 16-year-old Felix Senet Takona was assaulted while in police custody at Narosusura Police Station in Narok South Sub-County.
The minor had reportedly been arrested on suspicion of committing a petty offence and is currently receiving treatment at Narok County Referral Hospital.
“IPOA is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrest and subsequent injury of the minor. The Authority will determine the extent of police involvement and, where necessary, make appropriate recommendations for redress,” Hassan said.
The Authority stated that the investigation is part of its constitutional mandate to ensure accountability and uphold human rights in policing, in line with Article 244 of the Constitution.
IPOA emphasized that it will conduct the probe impartially and independently, reiterating its commitment to holding law enforcement officers accountable for any violations.
“The Authority is committed to conducting this and other investigations impartially as it fulfils its mandate of holding the police accountable and advancing the objectives of Article 244 of the Constitution,” the statement read.
IPOA’s findings will determine whether disciplinary or criminal action will be recommended against officers involved in the alleged assault.
