KIBERA, Kenya — A Kibera court has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of defiling a 15-year-old girl in a case that underscores the judiciary’s growing resolve to protect minors from sexual violence.
The convict, whose name was withheld to safeguard the identity of the minor, was found guilty by Principal Magistrate Murage after the prosecution successfully proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt through six witnesses.
According to court documents, the incident occurred while the victim’s mother was away working casual jobs, leaving the minor at home. The accused took advantage of her absence to commit the offence.
“This conviction followed a well-coordinated prosecution led by Michael Mutune, who presented six compelling witnesses detailing how the accused took advantage of the minor while her mother was away,” said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in a statement.
In her ruling, Magistrate Murage noted the grave nature of the crime, citing the vulnerability of the young victim and the predatory circumstances under which the offence was committed.
She further observed that the accused had absconded mid-trial in February 2024 while out on bond, delaying the proceedings before being re-arrested.
The magistrate imposed a 20-year prison sentence, stating that the punishment should serve as a stern warning to offenders targeting children.
“The sentence is meant not only to punish but also to deter others from committing similar offences,” she said.
The ruling comes amid heightened public concern over rising cases of sexual offences against minors across Kenya, with the Judiciary and ODPP reiterating their commitment to securing justice for victims and imposing harsher penalties on perpetrators.
