NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast rainfall across at least seven regions of the country this week, alongside hot daytime conditions in several areas and unusually cold nights in high-altitude regions.
In its weekly outlook covering December 16–22, 2025, the Met Department said rainfall is expected in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, North-eastern Kenya, and the South-eastern lowlands.
“Rainfall is expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, North-eastern and the South-eastern lowlands,” KMD said in its advisory.
According to the forecast, mornings in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley will generally be sunny, though isolated showers may occur in some areas.
This will be followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms, which may occasionally spread to wider areas, with night-time showers expected through the week.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, mornings are likely to be cloudy with occasional light rains, followed by sunny intervals. Afternoon showers are expected in a few places, while nights will be partly cloudy with intermittent rainfall.
The Coastal region is forecast to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights, but with showers likely to occur in the morning, afternoon, and at night in several areas.
Alongside the rainfall, KMD warned of high daytime temperatures, with average maximum temperatures exceeding 30°C in the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya, as well as parts of the South-eastern lowlands, the Rift Valley and Western Kenya.
Conversely, cold nights are expected in high-altitude areas. The department said minimum night-time temperatures of below 10°C will be recorded in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the North and Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The forecast comes days after the Met Department warned of heavy rainfall across multiple regions, including Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Central Kenya, and Nairobi, noting that the rains were expected to bring relief to farmers who had expressed concern over drying crops.
However, the department also cautioned residents in Marsabit and Turkana counties to remain alert, citing the likelihood of strong winds in the two counties during the forecast period.
KMD has advised the public to stay updated on daily forecasts and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas prone to flooding, lightning, and strong winds.
