NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Railways is set to roll out the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service in September 2025, establishing a strategic link between Mombasa Terminus in Miritini and Mombasa Railway Station in the CBD.
The 16.6-kilometer line comprises 2.8km of newly constructed track and 13.8km of rehabilitated track, and is expected to carry at least 4,000 passengers daily.
The service will provide seamless connectivity for travelers using the Madaraka Express Passenger Service to and from Nairobi, while also serving communities along the corridor, including Shimanzi, Mazeras, and Changamwe.
Kenya Railways said the project underscores its commitment to providing safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable urban mobility solutions, with the goal of reducing congestion on Mombasa’s busy roads and enhancing regional transport efficiency.
On Friday, Principal Secretar y for Transport Mohamed Daghar, accompanied by the Kenya Railways Board of Directors and Management, conducted an inspection tour of the upcoming service. The visit aimed to assess the state of works ahead of the planned commissioning.
“This is a game-changer for the people of Mombasa. The commuter rail will not only ease travel for thousands daily but also integrate seamlessly with the Madaraka Express for long-distance passengers,” said PS Daghar during the inspection.
Once operational, the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service will complement other urban mobility initiatives by the government, strengthening public transport systems while boosting economic and social activities in the coastal city.
