NAIROBI, Kenya—The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has joined the nation in mourning the death of Supreme Court Judge Mohammed Ibrahim, describing his passing as a devastating loss to the Judiciary, the legal profession, and the administration of justice in Kenya.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, LSK President Faith Odhiambo paid glowing tribute to the late jurist, praising his calm demeanour, sharp intellect, and lifelong commitment to justice and public service.
“I have received the sad news of the passing on of Hon. Mr. Justice Mohammed Ibrahim, SCJ. Justice Ibrahim served on the Bench with unparalleled grace and distinguished intellect,” Odhiambo said.
She noted that Justice Ibrahim’s rare calmness reflected a deep understanding of judicial authority as a tool for service and social order, adding that his death leaves a huge void at the Supreme Court and within the wider justice system.
LSK highlighted Justice Ibrahim’s trailblazing role as the first Kenyan from the Somali community to be admitted to the Bar, a milestone achieved at a time when the community faced deep marginalisation.
According to Odhiambo, the late judge used his early legal career to champion human rights and equality, defending marginalised groups and promoting the ideals of a fair and just society.
“He was a towering source of inspiration to all who dared to dream,” she said, noting that his record of excellence and ethical conduct remained consistent throughout his service as a High Court judge and later at the Supreme Court.
Justice Ibrahim joined Kenya’s inaugural Supreme Court bench following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, where he quickly distinguished himself as an independent and astute voice of reason.
LSK said his contributions to Kenya’s jurisprudence reflected immense legal knowledge, depth of character, and an unwavering dedication to advancing the rule of law.
“His sound contributions portrayed a great wealth of knowledge, depth of character, and dedication to advancing the law. He will be dearly missed by all who experienced him,” Odhiambo stated.
The Law Society of Kenya extended its heartfelt condolences to Justice Ibrahim’s family, friends, and colleagues in the Judiciary, calling for solidarity during the period of mourning.
“May his soul rest in peace, and may perpetual light shine upon him,” the statement concluded.
