Police Service To Receive Sh28bn Boost in Equipment and Welfare

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Government has announced a sweeping Sh28 billion modernization initiative for the National Police Service, focusing on upgrading equipment and improving officer welfare over the next two years.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen unveiled the program during an Interdenominational Prayer Service at the National Police College, Embakasi A Campus.

One of the components of the upgrade involves the procurement of 3,000 new vehicles, aimed at enhancing mobility and operational efficiency.

“This year, 1,000 cars will be delivered early, with the remainder arriving later,” said Murkomen.

The new fleet is expected to significantly bolster the police force’s capacity to respond to security challenges nationwide.

The modernization initiative extends beyond vehicles.

It includes the acquisition of advanced protective gear and armored vehicles, aligning with the Government’s goal to create a professional and well-equipped police force.

Murkomen emphasized the Government’s commitment to transforming the police service, ensuring officers are better prepared to safeguard the nation.

Acknowledging the ongoing reforms initiated by his predecessor, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Murkomen highlighted efforts such as the digitization of police operations and improved officer welfare.

Following the recommendations of the David Maraga Taskforce, the Government has increased salaries for lower-cadre officers by up to 20%, with an additional 10% increment slated for this year.

A comprehensive medical scheme has also been introduced to guarantee quality healthcare for officers.

Housing remains a critical area of focus, with 582 units delivered and 1,000 more under construction as part of the Affordable Housing Programme.

The Government aims to provide 17,000 new housing units, addressing long-standing accommodation issues within the force.

“We are also planning to refurbish police stations across the country to create conducive working environments for our officers,” added Murkomen.

Murkomen also lauded the National Police Service’s role in international and local security operations.

He cited the deployment of 400 officers to the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, aimed at combating gang violence.

Domestically, the multi-agency Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift has achieved a 62% reduction in cattle rustling.

Counter-terrorism efforts have further reduced Kenya’s risk of terrorist attacks.

In addressing mental health challenges, Murkomen pledged support for initiatives aimed at fostering a supportive environment for officers.

He criticized the criminalization of attempted suicide, advocating for a culture of compassion and assistance.

Additionally, Murkomen reiterated that there is no Government policy permitting abduction, emphasizing the role of the police in maintaining law and order.

Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja echoed Murkomen’s sentiments, urging officers to enhance the service’s public image and acknowledging their sacrifices.
