NAIROBI, Kenya- In a move set to bolster sports and talent development in Kenya, President William Ruto has announced a Sh500 million investment to overhaul the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
Speaking during his visit to Homa Bay Town on Friday, Ruto confirmed the renovation project will be completed in time for next year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, positioning the stadium as a centerpiece for national events.
The refurbishment, funded through the national sports fund, aims to elevate the stadium to meet modern standards.
According to Ruto, the upgrades will significantly enhance the stadium’s capacity and facilities, providing a world-class venue for sports and community activities.
“The sports fund will now be used exclusively for the development of sports infrastructure and nurturing talent across the country,” said Ruto.
“We will channel Sh500 million to Homa Bay County to complete the Raila Odinga Stadium and create more opportunities for our youth.”
The president highlighted his administration’s focus on using sports as a vehicle for empowerment and unity, signaling a shift from past neglect in the sector.
This ambitious project aligns with the government’s broader strategy to invest in sports infrastructure nationwide.
By focusing on initiatives like the Raila Odinga Stadium overhaul, the administration aims to create more avenues for young talent to flourish while boosting Kenya’s profile in sports and events hosting.
The planned unveiling of the refurbished stadium during Mashujaa Day underscores its importance as a symbol of progress and collaboration.
With Homa Bay set to host the celebrations, the project will not only enhance the county’s infrastructure but also spotlight its role as a vibrant hub for sports and cultural festivities.
As the renovation gears up, Kenyans can look forward to a state-of-the-art facility that promises to inspire athletes, uplift the community, and contribute to the country’s sports legacy.
