KIMININI, Kenya – Detectives from Kiminini in Trans Nzoia County have arrested a suspect linked to sodomy and the subsequent death of a minor, ending a manhunt that began after the suspect went into hiding following the incident.
The suspect, Erick Wamalwa Namukana alias Funje, who is the child’s stepfather, was arrested in the Shimo la Tewa area of Milimani, Kiminini Sub-County, following sustained efforts by detectives who pursued leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Background of the incident
Preliminary investigations have established that the minor was allegedly sexually assaulted between March 2 and 3, 2026, before being rushed to Bikeke Health Centre for treatment.
He was subsequently referred to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital, where he was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the suspect fled to an unknown destination, prompting detectives to intensify investigations and pursue leads to trail him down and bring him to justice.
Suspect in custody
The suspect was escorted to the DCI Kiminini offices, where investigators are processing him as they continue their investigation ahead of his arraignment at Kitale Law Courts.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends, and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children from sexual violence, pursuing justice for victims, and ensuring that such grave offences are thoroughly investigated and those found culpable are held accountable in accordance with the law.
Legal context
The case is being investigated under the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006, which provides for the protection of children from sexual exploitation and abuse.
The Act prescribes severe penalties for defilement and related offences, particularly where the victim is a minor.
Under Article 53 of the Constitution, every child has the right to be protected from abuse, neglect, harmful cultural practices, all forms of violence, inhuman treatment and punishment, and hazardous or exploitative labour.
The state is obligated to fulfil these rights under Article 21 of the Constitution.
