NAKURU, Kenya – Five people have died following a grisly road accident at Kikopey area in Gilgil, Nakuru County, along the busy Nakuru-Naivasha highway.
The accident happened on Sunday night when a saloon car carrying six occupants collided head-on with an Easy Coach bus.
Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winstone Mwakio confirmed the accident.
The bus was travelling towards Nakuru when it collided with the private vehicle, which was headed in the direction of Nairobi.
Five occupants of the saloon car died in the crash, while another passenger sustained serious injuries.
The injured victim was rushed to Nakuru Level 5 Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to PNN Funeral Home pending identification and further procedures.
Preliminary report points to dangerous overtaking
Preliminary reports indicate that the Easy Coach bus may have been overtaking other vehicles carelessly shortly before the collision.
Police are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
The Nakuru-Naivasha highway is one of the country’s busiest routes and has frequently recorded serious accidents, particularly involving speeding, dangerous overtaking and heavy traffic.
Authorities have continued to urge motorists using the highway to exercise caution and avoid dangerous manoeuvres.
