Government to Cover Funeral Costs for Ishiara Protest Victims

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – As calls for justice intensify following the fatal police shooting of two young men during protests in Ishiara, the Government has pledged to cover their funeral expenses.

Mbeere North MP Leonard Wamuthende made the announcement while visiting the families of Morris Mugo and Patrick Kariuki, who were killed during Tuesday’s demonstrations over the poor state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital in Embu County.

“As the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North, I come to offer my condolences and assure the families that the Government will stand with them during this difficult time,” he said.

Beyond the pledge, Wamuthende signaled a push for accountability, revealing plans to work with legal experts to secure justice and compensation for the bereaved families.

“While no compensation can replace a life, I will work with lawyers and the Government to ensure these families receive justice and fair compensation,” he added.

He also confirmed that he had written to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), calling for a full investigation into the shootings.

“We are awaiting IPOA’s findings so that those responsible can be prosecuted and held accountable,” he said.

At the same time, the MP cautioned against politicising the tragedy, urging leaders and the public to allow space for mourning and justice.

“I call upon both political leaders and members of the public to refrain from politicising this tragedy. This is a moment for compassion and justice for the victims and their families,” the MP said.

Funeral arrangements for the two victims are ongoing, with discussions underway about a possible joint burial.
