Nairobi Wakes Up to Flooded Roads as Overnight Rains Disrupt Saturday Travel

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Heavy overnight rainfall left several roads across Nairobi waterlogged on Saturday, October 31, disrupting movement and raising fresh concerns about the capital’s ability to cope with intense downpours.

Photos and videos shared by Kenyans on social media showed sections of roads submerged in water, overwhelmed drainage channels and motorists struggling to navigate flooded streets.

Among the areas affected was the Thika Road corridor, where flooding was reported around Githurai. Footage circulating online showed water covering parts of the road as vehicles cautiously passed through the affected sections.

In another incident captured on video, a bus appeared to have become stuck in a ditch along Uhuru Highway following the heavy rainfall. Traffic police officers were seen at the scene, although the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.

Parklands was also among the areas where flooding was reported, with a photograph showing motorists attempting to navigate a road covered in accumulated rainwater.

Pedestrians were equally affected, with videos showing people struggling to find safe routes through sections of streets and walkways inundated by water.

The scenes highlighted the disruption caused by the downpour, particularly in areas where rainwater accumulated faster than drainage systems could channel it away.

Nairobi drainage systems under scrutiny

The latest flooding has renewed questions about Nairobi’s drainage infrastructure and its capacity to handle periods of intense rainfall.

Recurring waterlogging in parts of the capital has often disrupted transport, affected businesses and made movement difficult for residents. The latest incidents have brought those concerns back into focus as the country experiences the October–December short-rains season.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings about heavy rainfall in parts of the country, alongside the possibility of strong winds and flash floods.

Such conditions can create dangerous situations, particularly along roads with poor drainage, low-lying areas and locations near rivers and other waterways.

Motorists and pedestrians are therefore advised to exercise caution when travelling during heavy rainfall, avoid attempting to drive or walk through fast-moving floodwater, and follow guidance from relevant authorities.

The flooding in Nairobi has once again drawn attention to the need for effective drainage maintenance and better preparedness as the rainy season continues.

For residents, Saturday’s scenes were a reminder of how quickly heavy rainfall can disrupt movement across the capital, turning familiar roads into difficult and potentially hazardous routes.
