Ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko To Support Families Affected After Kasarani Shootings

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has pledged to assist the families of mourners who lost their lives during the tragic shooting incident at Kasarani Stadium, where thousands had gathered to pay their last respects to the former Prime Minister, late Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Sonko described the deaths as “unfortunate” and “heartbreaking,” expressing sorrow for the grieving families who are now struggling to afford burial expenses.

“It is unfortunate that the lives of innocent mourners were lost at Kasarani Stadium. The cries of grieving families, some unable to afford the burial expenses for their loved ones, is heartbreaking,” he wrote.

Sonko announced that his Sonko Rescue Team would step in to support the affected families by providing coffins, clearing morgue fees, and offering free VIP chariots to transport the bodies to various parts of the country for burial.

“As usual and in solidarity with the bereaved families, the Sonko Rescue Team will provide coffins, clear all the morgue fees, and offer our VIP chariots for free transportation of the bodies to different parts of the country so that we give our departed heroes a dignified send-off,” he said.

He concluded his message with a prayer for the victims, stating:

“May the Almighty God grant eternal peace to all the deceased and provide strength and comfort to their families during this difficult time.”

The Kasarani tragedy, which left at least four people dead and several injured, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability from human rights groups and political leaders. Sonko’s gesture has since drawn praise from Kenyans who see it as a compassionate move amid a moment of national grief.
