LONDON, United Kingdom – Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual award following a prolific season for Bayern Munich and England.
Kane’s triumph was announced by the official Ballon d’Or account on X, marking a landmark moment for the England captain, whose goalscoring performances have established him among the leading players of his generation.
The Bayern Munich striker enjoyed a remarkable campaign, delivering goals for both club and country while helping Bayern secure the Bundesliga title.
He also impressed on the international stage, scoring six goals for England at the 2026 World Cup as the Three Lions finished third.
Kane Joins England’s Ballon d’Or Legends
Kane becomes the fourth Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or, joining an exclusive group that includes Sir Stanley Matthews, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.
Matthews won the inaugural award in 1956, while Keegan claimed the honour in 1978 and 1979. Owen was the most recent English winner before Kane, taking the prize in 2001.
Kane’s victory therefore ends a 25-year wait for an English recipient and adds another major individual honour to his career.
Goalscoring Success Powers Kane’s Triumph
Kane’s award recognises a season in which his finishing ability, consistency and leadership made him a central figure for Bayern Munich and England.
At club level, he helped Bayern win the Bundesliga, strengthening his case for individual recognition. His six goals at the World Cup further underlined his importance to England during the tournament.
The striker has built his reputation on his ability to score from a variety of positions, combine with teammates and deliver in high-pressure matches.
The Ballon d’Or is awarded based on individual performances, team achievements and sporting conduct, with an international jury of journalists selecting the winner from a shortlist of nominees.
Kane’s success places him among the select group of players to have won the award since its introduction in 1956.
For England, the result represents a significant milestone. For Kane, it is recognition of a season in which his goals helped define Bayern Munich’s domestic campaign and England’s World Cup run.
