Here’s What to Do as Kenya Power Paybill 888888 Goes Down

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Power has announced a temporary disruption affecting its postpaid bill payment services through the popular M-Pesa Paybill number 888888, citing a system interruption.

In a public notice, the state-owned electricity distributor said the technical glitch had rendered the Paybill platform temporarily inaccessible, impacting thousands of postpaid customers who rely on mobile payments to settle their bills.

“While we work to resolve the issue and restore normal operations as soon as possible, we urge our customers to make payments at Kenya Power banking halls, which remain open across the country,” the company said.

Technicians are working to fix the system, with the company assuring customers that services will be restored promptly.

For now, Kenya Power has advised postpaid users to consider alternative options including its USSD code *977#, which enables both prepaid and postpaid payments, token purchases, outage reporting, and verification of staff identities.

Other options include payments via authorized banks such as KCB, Equity, Cooperative, and Absa.

Prepaid customers remain unaffected, as token purchases continue through Paybill number 888880 or *977#.

Customers applying for new connections can still make payments using Paybill 888899, which remains operational.

Kenya Power apologised for the inconvenience and encouraged those needing assistance to reach out via its official communication channels, including WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook.

The utility firm has been streamlining its payment systems in recent months.

In September 2024, it locked out third-party agents from vending tokens, restricting all transactions to direct Kenya Power channels as part of a broader accountability and efficiency strategy.
