HOMA BAY, Kenya – It is now emerging that the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County is ready to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2025.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, revealed that the facility is set for official handover after just five months of construction.
“This stands as a testament to President William Ruto’s commitment to the people of Homa Bay and his promise to upgrade the facility into a modern 12,000-seater stadium,” said CS Mvurya.
Beyond the celebrations, CS Mvurya indicated that the stadium will serve as a vital hub for sports and talent development in the region.
Why Homa Bay is witnessing significant development
During an inspection tour alongside the National Celebrations Committee, chaired by Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, local leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress not only of the stadium but also of other development projects being implemented by various government ministries in the region.
“We remain committed to upholding the spirit of Madaraka Day by celebrating Kenya’s self-governance with pride and unity,” said PS Omollo.
According to CS Mvurya, the remarkable progress of the stadium reflects the spirit of unity and shared prosperity currently being fostered in the country, championed by President Ruto and former prime minister Raila Odinga.
When is Madaraka Day celebrated in Kenya
Madaraka Day in 2025 will be celebrated on June 1st, marking the day Kenya attained internal self-rule.
Celebrations are planned, including those in Homa Bay County. It is a public holiday, and the date aligns with a United Nations holiday.
The day is observed with various festivals and events to commemorate this important milestone in Kenyan history.
Present during the inspection were Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports), Betsy Njagi (Blue Economy), Ummi Bashir (Culture and Heritage), Dennis Itumbi (Creative Economy), Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, Homabay MP Peter Kaluma, Sports Kenya CEO Gabriel Komora, representatives of the National Celebrations Committee, and officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports.
