‘Let Baba RIP’: CS Wandayi Under Fire For Discussing 2027 Politics Ahead of Raila Odinga’s Burial

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia has criticized Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi for making what he termed as premature political statements about the 2027 General Election, urging him to allow the country to mourn the former Prime Minister, late Raila Amolo Odinga, in peace.

In a pointed post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kaguchia cautioned Wandayi against politicizing the ongoing mourning period, reminding him that even Raila himself had always prioritized unity and national reflection in moments of grief.

“My friend Opiyo Wandayi, umeanza siasa mapema sana. Let Baba rest in peace. Mambo ya 2027 wachia wananchi,” Kaguchia wrote. “Even Baba himself didn’t commit what you are purporting to commit now!”

The legislator, a close ally of President William Ruto, said while Wandayi had every right to defend his role in the Cabinet, this was not the time to invoke campaign rhetoric.

“Anyway, you have a right to defend your job in Cabinet… but for the majority of Kenyans suffering out here, please let them mourn Baba in peace without this unnecessary 2027 politics!” he added.

Kaguchia’s remarks came shortly after Wandayi, speaking in Bondo, pledged that ODM would continue its cooperation with the Ruto administration “beyond 2027” — a statement that has stirred mixed reactions within the opposition and among Raila’s supporters.

The exchange underscores growing unease within Kenya’s political landscape as the country navigates a delicate balance between honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy and positioning for the post-Raila political future.
