LUSAKA, ZAMBIA- The Mozilla Foundation has announced the third edition of Mozilla Festival House (MozFest House), an innovative gathering focused on harnessing the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data ethics, and nurturing community-driven technological alternatives.
This year’s event scheduled from November 20 – 21, will take place at the Lusaka International Convention Center in Zambia, bringing together a rich mosaic of voices from Africa and around the globe under the theme: “Collective Action for Trustworthy AI.”
Zambia’s burgeoning digital ecosystem and its active community of innovators provide an exceptional backdrop for the festival’s crucial discussions on inclusivity, accessibility, and collaborative efforts in technology.
“As digital transformation surges across Africa, MozFest House Zambia seeks to amplify local and regional voices, forging connections between global experts and grassroots leaders,” stated Momoe Ikeda-Chełmińska, MozFest Director.
“This event embodies our commitment to tackling the most formidable challenges posed by technology through an array of perspectives, reinforcing Africa’s significant role in crafting a fair, inclusive, and human-centric digital future.”
MozFest House will feature an inspiring lineup of mainstage plenaries, headlined by keynote speaker Angela Oduor Lungati, Executive Director of Ushahidi, a globally recognized nonprofit tech organization.
Lungati will elaborate on the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies tailored to support Africa’s diverse communities in generating impactful public interest outcomes.
Additional mainstage presenters include notable figures such as Dr. Chitundu Kasase, CEO of the National Technology Business Center; Tendai Miti, Executive Director of Sistah Sistah; Granville Wood, Director of Open Energy Labs; and Priscilla Chomba-Kinywa, Chief Technology Officer at Greenpeace.
Following its inaugural event in Nairobi last year and its successful return to Amsterdam in June 2023, MozFest House is now collaborating with Visa as the Presenting Sponsor and the Skoll Foundation as the showcase sponsor. Together, they are championing progressive solutions to urgent issues like digital rights, trustworthy AI, and equitable access to technology.
“What sets MozFest apart is our unique blend of technology, activism, and art—a combination that is both rare and essential for fostering a more inclusive technological landscape. We aim to stand in solidarity with various social justice movements to collaboratively envision a digital future that benefits us all,” remarked Momoe Ikeda-Chełmińska.
For over two decades, Mozilla has championed visionary ideas, empowered global leaders, and supported people-centered campaigns to ensure an open and accessible Internet for everyone. Previous MozFest gatherings have featured esteemed figures such as Tim Berners-Lee, Phumzile Van Damme, Lawrence Mute, Angela Davis, Mona Chalabi, and Chris Smalls.
“MozFest House Zambia is not merely an event; it is a clarion call for collective action,” emphasized Koliwe Majama, Senior Program Officer. “It represents an opportunity to reflect on how we can collaboratively shape Africa’s digital future, centering the diverse communities and, importantly, the often unheard voices that stand to be affected.”
MozFest House Zambia will also present an array of dynamic sessions addressing critical issues at the intersection of technology, AI, and societal impact, ensuring a rich dialogue on the pathways to a better digital world.
