NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Youth Service (NYS) has clarified that a viral video showing its officers in an altercation with a civilian passenger dates back two years and does not depict a recent incident.
In a statement, NYS said the incident was reported to the relevant authorities when it occurred and disciplinary action was taken against the two officers involved.
“The National Youth Service (NYS) is aware of a video currently circulating on social media depicting an altercation involving an NYS officer and a civilian,” the service said.
NYS said the continued circulation of the footage could create the false impression that the incident had happened recently.
Officers Faced Disciplinary Action
According to the service, the incident was dealt with in accordance with established administrative procedures after it was brought to the attention of the relevant authorities.
NYS said it does not condone violence, misconduct or abuse of authority by its personnel.
“The NYS is a disciplined service founded on respect for the law, professionalism, integrity and responsible conduct,” it said.
The service added that any conduct inconsistent with those values is addressed through appropriate administrative and legal mechanisms.
Public Urged To Verify Old Videos
NYS urged members of the public to exercise caution when consuming and sharing videos circulating on social media, particularly old footage that may be presented as a recent event.
The service said Kenyans should not be alarmed or misled by the recirculation of the video.
“The matter was addressed at the time, and the Service remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of discipline and professionalism among its personnel,” NYS said.
The clarification comes amid increased public scrutiny of the conduct of security and disciplined service officers, with videos of alleged misconduct often attracting widespread attention when shared online.
NYS thanked members of the public for their continued confidence and partnership with the service.
