SIAYA, Kenya — Police have seized 990 litres of suspected chang’aa in South East Alego Location, Siaya County, following a road accident along the Ng’iya–Ndori Road.
Officers from Kogelo Police Station said the recovery was made after a motor vehicle collided with a motorcycle, prompting a response to the scene. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled immediately after the accident.
Upon inspection, officers recovered 18 sacks containing sachets of the suspected illicit brew. Five sacks were found inside the abandoned vehicle, while 13 others had been concealed nearby, suggesting an attempt to hide part of the consignment.
Police secured the exhibits and moved them into custody as investigations commenced.
“The driver escaped, but exhibits were recovered and necessary action taken,” the National Police Service said in a statement.
Investigators are now pursuing leads to identify and arrest the suspects believed to be involved in the transportation and distribution of the illicit alcohol.
The seizure forms part of ongoing enforcement operations targeting illegal brews, which authorities say pose serious public health and safety risks.
Illicit alcohol has been linked to fatal poisoning, long-term health complications, and social harm, particularly in rural communities. Kenyan law criminalises the manufacture, transportation, and sale of unlicensed alcoholic drinks under the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act.
The National Police Service said it will continue to intensify operations aimed at dismantling supply chains linked to chang’aa and other illicit brews.
Police urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities linked to illegal alcohol production and distribution.
