Speaking during the launch, Ruto emphasized the importance of restoring the river, not only for environmental sustainability but also for its potential to improve public health and foster local economic growth.
“A clean and revitalized Nairobi River means improved public health, enhanced local business opportunities, and a safer environment for the residents,” he stated.
The Nairobi River Regeneration Project is designed to address long-standing pollution issues while restoring the river’s natural beauty.
The initiative includes the creation of public green spaces that will uplift surrounding communities, providing them with recreational areas and boosting the local economy.
“This project is a bold step towards a sustainable future, ensuring that both present and future generations benefit from a cleaner, greener Nairobi,” Ruto declared, stressing that addressing climate change is critical to Kenya’s future.
He called for accountability among polluters, warning that environmental degradation will no longer be tolerated.
In addition to environmental restoration, Climate WorX is set to create over 200,000 jobs for the youth, with 20,000 of those opportunities allocated to Nairobi alone.
The programme, which succeeds the Kazi Mtaani initiative, will focus on climate change adaptation efforts, including the rehabilitation of 45 kilometers along the Nairobi River.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura encouraged interested youth to register for the program online through http://crsp.go.ke, noting that this initiative presents a significant opportunity for employment and environmental stewardship.
