NAIROBI, Kenya – The Senate is set to convene for a special sitting Wednesday to hear impeachment charges against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
This marks the third time in two years that Governor Mwangaza faces the Senate on allegations that could cost her the governorship.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the special session on Tuesday, following a formal notification from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Meru.
The letter, dated August 9, 2024, conveyed the approval of a motion to remove Governor Mwangaza from office through impeachment.
“I have appointed Wednesday, August 14, 2024, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 2:30 pm,” Speaker Kingi stated. “The business to be transacted at the sitting shall be the hearing of the charges against Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County.”
The impeachment charges against Governor Mwangaza, brought forward by Nominated MCA Zipporah Kinya, include three serious accusations: gross violations of the Constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
These allegations have put Mwangaza’s leadership under intense scrutiny, casting a shadow over her political career.
The Meru Governor has been a controversial figure since taking office, with previous impeachment attempts highlighting ongoing tensions between her administration and the county assembly.
