NAIROBI, Kenya – A Somali national has been fined Sh370,000 after pleading guilty to three offences linked to his unlawful presence in Kenya and the fraudulent acquisition of Kenyan identity and passport documents.
Mohamud Mohammed Roble was convicted at the JKIA Law Courts after investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who took over the case from immigration officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
According to the DCI, investigations established that Roble had obtained Kenyan registration documents through false declarations before securing a Kenyan passport.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to all three charges, attracting separate fines totalling Sh370,000.
How the Sh370,000 Fine Was Imposed
The court imposed the following penalties:
- Sh150,000 for being unlawfully present in Kenya.
- Sh150,000 for making a false declaration to obtain a Kenyan passport.
- Sh70,000 for knowingly presenting an identity card containing false entries with intent to deceive.
The sentences also provided for imprisonment in default of payment of the respective fines.
Court Orders Passport Destroyed
Beyond the financial penalties, the court ordered that Roble be repatriated to Somalia upon payment of the fines.
His Kenyan passport, which investigators said had been fraudulently obtained, was also ordered surrendered to the Director General of Immigration Services for destruction.
The orders effectively address both his immigration status and the travel document at the centre of the case.
DCI Warns Against Identity Document Fraud
The DCI said it remained committed to protecting the integrity of Kenya’s identity and travel documents through investigations and prosecutions conducted in collaboration with relevant government agencies.
The agency said it would continue pursuing individuals suspected of circumventing the law through fraudulent documentation.
