KISUMU, Kenya — Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a violent attack on Chemelil Academy in Muhoroni Sub-County that left school staff injured and property extensively damaged.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the attack occurred on June 18, 2026, when a gang of about 20 men armed with crude weapons stormed the institution and unleashed destruction before fleeing.
Law enforcement officers responded after receiving a distress call reporting an ongoing attack at the school. Upon arriving at the scene, officers spotted the suspects escaping in different directions, with some heading towards Achego while others disappeared into nearby sugarcane plantations.
Investigators said the attackers vandalised the administration block and forcefully broke into the offices of the principal and deputy principal. The gang allegedly assaulted members of staff before stealing 10 smartphones, cash, and other valuables.
“The gang had wreaked havoc, smashing their way into the administration block and vandalising the offices of the Principal and Deputy Principal,” the DCI said in a statement.
Injured staff members were rushed to Nyang’oma Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Police said the victims are in stable condition.
Following the incident, detectives launched a manhunt that led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Bernard Ouma, Thomas Onyango Ouma, and Walter Owa, also known as Teddy Obul. The suspects were apprehended at various locations within Chemelil and remain in police custody pending arraignment.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing, and efforts have been intensified to track down additional suspects believed to have participated in the attack.
The incident has raised concerns about security in learning institutions, particularly in areas where criminal gangs have increasingly targeted public facilities and educational institutions.
Police urged members of the public with information that could assist investigations to cooperate with law enforcement agencies as the search for the remaining suspects continues.
