Pop icon Britney Spears has checked into a rehabilitation facility, weeks after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The 44-year-old singer voluntarily started treatment, her representative confirmed to multiple US media outlets, in what appears to be a step toward addressing ongoing personal challenges.
The move comes just three weeks before Spears is scheduled to appear in a California court to face DUI charges stemming from a March 4 incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the singer was reported for driving her BMW erratically at high speed on a motorway.
Officers who pulled her over noted signs of impairment, after which she underwent a series of field sobriety tests.
Following the arrest, her representative described the incident as “completely inexcusable,” adding that her family and close associates were working on a plan to support her well-being.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law… hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in her life,” the representative said.
Spears’ decision to seek treatment has been framed as part of broader efforts to stabilise her personal life, with family members expected to play a supportive role during the process.
One of the most successful pop artists of her generation, Spears rose to global fame with chart-topping hits including Baby One More Time, Toxic, and Gimme More, shaping the sound of late 1990s and early 2000s pop music.
Her personal struggles have long been in the public spotlight. From 2008 to 2021, she was under a court-ordered conservatorship that granted her father control over her finances and key aspects of her personal life. The arrangement was later terminated, allowing her to regain autonomy.
The case now shifts to the courts, where Spears will face the DUI charge even as she undergoes treatment, with her next appearance expected later this month.
