Anne Carson Wins Nobel Prize In Literature

Date:

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature.

Carson, 76, is celebrated for works that often cross the boundaries between poetry, fiction and scholarship.

The Nobel Prize committee selected her “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”.

The Nobel Prize is awarded for a lifetime’s body of work and is regarded as the most prestigious award in global literature. The winner receives 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about £900,000 or $1.2 million.

Carson Draws On Classical Literature

Carson’s work has frequently drawn inspiration from ancient Greek literature while giving classical stories and characters new contemporary interpretations.

In 2019, her performance piece Norma Jeane Baker of Troy drew parallels between two famous women from different historical periods — Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe.

In 2021, she released The Trojan Women: A Comic, a graphic retelling of Euripides’ ancient tragedy.

Her translation of Sophocles’ Elektra was also staged in London last year, with actor Brie Larson starring in the production.

Carson’s notable works include The Glass Essay, Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, Nox, Float and The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos.

Carson Was In Iceland When Nobel News Came

Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said she broke the news to Carson by telephone shortly before the public announcement.

Carson was in Iceland at the time.

“She had time to tell me was that she is, for the moment, in Iceland, where she is listening to the wind,” Carlberg said.

“She was taken by surprise but very happy. I could hear that in her voice.”

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson lives in Michigan and has also held Icelandic citizenship since 2022.

Nobel Committee Praises Carson’s Innovation

Anders Olsson, chairman of the Swedish Academy’s Nobel Committee for Literature, praised Carson for breaking away from traditional forms of lyrical poetry and creating new approaches to contemporary literature.

He said her writing moves between classical and modern poetry as well as different genres and art forms.

“This method of writing leads to playful and ironic works that move not only between classical and modern poetry but also between different genres and artforms,” Olsson said.

Carson’s work has included poetry, translations, essays and collaborations across different artistic disciplines.

Her approach has allowed her to challenge conventional boundaries between literary genres while maintaining a strong connection to classical traditions.

Three Decades As Classics Professor

Carson has been a professor of classics for more than 30 years, and her writing has frequently been influenced by Greek literature.

Her translations of ancient works often give them a contemporary perspective while retaining their connection to the original texts.

Olsson also highlighted Carson’s collaborations with visual artists, choreographers and directors working in opera and theatre.

“Her collaborations with visual artists and choreographers and with opera and theatre directors demonstrate the freedom with which she relates to literary expectations and rule systems,” he said.

He said this freedom was central to the international importance of Carson’s work since the 1990s.

“It is this that lies behind the outstanding importance her work since the 1990s has had for the international art and literature scene,” Olsson said.

Carson’s Nobel recognition places her among the world’s most celebrated literary figures and honours a career built around experimentation, classical scholarship and the blending of different artistic forms
