GENEVA, Switzerland – In honour of the millions of selfless, volunteer blood donors who give others a second chance at life, the globe observes globe Blood Donor Day on June 14.
Giving blood is a selfless gesture that is essential in the treatment of diseases like cancer, anaemia, and severe blood loss.
Donors give blood to blood banks or agencies that help with transfusions during the procedure. Global healthcare systems depend on a consistent supply of healthy blood.
As Kenya joins the rest of the globe in commemorating this special day, the World health Organisation (WHO) says that the kindness of blood donors exemplifies the spirit of unity, improves communities, and saves lives.
“In addition to being a day to express gratitude, it also serves to draw attention to the continued and pressing need for regular, safe blood donations,” a statement from WHO reads in part.
WHO further said that this year, it honors every drop of blood offered by donors.
“Every gift inspires optimism since blood transfusions are necessary for millions of people annually throughout the world,” the statement further reads.
The objectives of the blood donation campaign:
- Raise public awareness about the critical need for blood and plasma donations and the impact they have on patients’ lives;
- Encourage both new and existing donors to give blood regularly, helping to ensure a stable and sufficient blood supply;
- Highlight the positive impact of blood donors on the health and well-being of others and promote the values of solidarity, compassion, and community through blood donation;
- Mobilize support from governments and development partners to invest in and sustain national blood programs to achieve universal access to safe blood transfusion worldwide.
World Blood Donor Day 2025: History
When scientist Richard Lower successfully transfused blood between two dogs in 1940 without causing any negative side effects, the groundwork for modern blood transfusion was established.
Safe blood donation and transfusion procedures in healthcare were made possible by this discovery. June 14 was declared World Blood Donor Day by the World Health Assembly in 2005, and it has been celebrated ever since.
World Blood Donor Day 2025: Significance
The goals of World Blood Donor Day 2025 are to emphasise the value of blood donation and guarantee a steady supply for medical requirements.
By highlighting how blood and plasma donations save lives, the campaign seeks to increase public awareness of the urgent need for these contributions.
Additionally, it promotes frequent donations from both new and returning donors, which helps to keep the blood supply steady and enough.
The day also emphasizes the significant influence of donors, who, through their altruistic deeds, foster principles of community, compassion, and solidarity.
To ensure that everyone in the world has access to safe blood transfusions, the initiative also aims to rally governments and development partners to support investments in and enhancements to national blood programs.
World Blood Donor Day encourages group action to address global healthcare issues through these initiatives.
