Grammy Award-winning American rapper Chance the Rapper is making the most of his stay in Kenya, using his visit to immerse himself in the country’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The Chicago-born artist recently toured the Nairobi National Museum, where he spent time learning about the Kenya Land and Freedom Army, popularly known as the Mau Mau. The visit formed part of his ongoing trip across the country, which has already seen him explore Mombasa and other cultural landmarks.
Sharing moments from the museum on social media, Chance reflected on the significance of Kenya’s struggle for independence and urged people to preserve and pass on the country’s liberation history.
“Today we went to Nairobi to learn more about the Land & Freedom Army, popularly known as the Mau Mau. The history of this incredibly important and successful violent revolt against British Colonialism and Subjugation MUST be taught to your children. Thank you, Kenya, for everything.”
During his tour of the Nairobi National Museum, Chance explored exhibits dedicated to Kenya’s history, culture and the country’s fight for independence.
His focus on the Mau Mau movement highlighted one of the defining chapters in Kenya’s liberation struggle against British colonial rule. The movement played a pivotal role in the country’s journey to independence, and its legacy continues to be commemorated through museums, memorials and historical exhibitions.
The rapper’s visit placed a global spotlight on the museum, one of Kenya’s leading cultural institutions, which houses archaeological discoveries, ethnographic collections and exhibitions documenting the nation’s political and cultural evolution.
Chance’s museum visit comes after several days of exploring different parts of Kenya.
The rapper has shared glimpses of his travels in Mombasa, posting photos and videos that showcase the country’s coastal scenery, culture and hospitality.
Born Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, Chance the Rapper rose to international fame with his critically acclaimed mixtapes Acid Rap and Coloring Book. The latter made history as the first streaming-only project to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
Over the years, he has earned multiple Grammy Awards and built a reputation not only for his music but also for his philanthropic work, particularly his support for education initiatives in his hometown of Chicago.
