Chief Justice Martha Koome has led the Judiciary in mourning retired High Court Judge Omondi Tunya, praising his distinguished judicial service and contribution to the rule of law.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court Martha Koome has led the Judiciary in mourning the death of retired High Court Judge Omondi Tunya, describing him as a distinguished judicial officer whose decades of service strengthened Kenya’s justice system.

In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Koome expressed sorrow over the passing of the retired judge and extended sympathies to his family, friends, former colleagues and all those who worked alongside him during his judicial career.

“It is with great sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya,” the Chief Justice said.

“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him during his distinguished judicial career.”

Distinguished judicial career

Koome said Justice Tunya dedicated many years to the administration of justice, beginning his career as a magistrate before rising to serve as a High Court judge.

She noted that throughout his judicial service, he was recognised for his diligence, integrity and commitment to the fair and timely administration of justice.

“Justice Tunya devoted many years of dedicated service to the administration of justice in Kenya. He began his judicial career as a Magistrate before his elevation to the High Court, where he served with distinction, diligence, and an unwavering commitment to the fair and timely administration of justice,” she said.

The Chief Justice added that his work contributed significantly to strengthening the rule of law and advancing the cause of justice in Kenya.

Judiciary stands with family

Koome said the Judiciary stands in solidarity with Justice Tunya’s family during the period of mourning, describing his death as a great loss to the institution.

“As the Judiciary mourns the loss of one of its former Judges, we stand in solidarity with his family during this difficult time. We pray that they may find strength, comfort, and solace in the cherished memories of his life and in the enduring legacy of his service to the people of Kenya,” she said.

She concluded by praying for the late judge’s eternal rest.

“May the Almighty grant the late (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya eternal rest, and may his soul rest in everlasting peace.”

The Judiciary has not yet announced details of Justice Tunya’s funeral arrangements.
