NAIROBI, Kenya — Renowned Tanzanian gospel artist Christina Shusho has released a moving tribute song titled “Pumzika Baba” in honor of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who died on October 15 while receiving treatment in Kerala, India.
The song — whose title translates to “Rest, Father” — has resonated deeply across East Africa, offering comfort and reflection as Kenyans observe a week of national mourning for the veteran opposition leader.
In the piece, Shusho describes Odinga as a “mwanamageuzi,” or reformist — a term deeply embedded in Swahili political discourse that captures his decades-long fight for democracy, constitutional change, and social justice.
“He fought for Kenyans and Africa at large. Africa is crying for Baba. We loved him, but God loved him more. Rest, Baba,” she sings in one of the verses.
The song opens with a solemn invocation, urging listeners to remember Odinga’s sacrifices and uphold the ideals he stood for.
It gradually transitions into a prayerful reflection on peace, unity, and perseverance — themes that echo through Shusho’s gospel repertoire.
“You were a defender of the weak, a voice for Kenya and Africa. You gave yourself for your people, and we will never forget your leadership,” she sings in Swahili.
Shusho, whose music often bridges faith and social consciousness, said she was compelled to honor Odinga’s legacy because of his impact beyond politics.
“Kenya is like my second home,” she wrote on her official platforms. “I had to stand with them as we celebrate this great son of Africa.”
Since its release, “Pumzika Baba” has drawn emotional reactions online, with fans praising Shusho for capturing the collective grief and admiration felt across the region.
“This song speaks to our hearts. Raila was our Baba, and this tribute reminds us to carry his vision forward,” one listener commented.
As memorial services continue in Bondo, Kisumu, and Nairobi, where Odinga will be laid to rest beside his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Shusho’s song has joined a growing wave of artistic tributes celebrating his life and legacy.
