Citizen TV political journalist Stephen Letoo has officially entered the race for the Kilgoris parliamentary seat, confirming that he will contest the constituency on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in the 2027 General Election.
Letoo announced on Saturday, August 29, during a political rally at Oldanyati Grounds in Narok County, bringing to an end months of speculation over his political ambitions.
The journalist made a high-profile entrance at the event, arriving at the venue by helicopter as supporters and political leaders gathered for the rally. His declaration marks a major transition from journalism to active politics after more than a decade of working in the media industry.
Before formally declaring his candidacy, Letoo had become increasingly active in Kilgoris and the wider Trans Mara region. Through the Stephen Letoo Foundation, he has supported education initiatives, sponsored needy students and participated in programmes targeting young people and women.
His activities have helped build a grassroots profile in a constituency where he now hopes to convert his popularity into political support.
One of his recent initiatives involved the distribution of goats worth approximately Sh2.6 million to women’s groups under the Jenga Mama empowerment programme.
The initiative targeted women at the grassroots and formed part of his wider community empowerment activities.
Letoo has also used sports to connect with young people in the constituency. He has sponsored football tournaments and other youth activities aimed at promoting talent development while creating opportunities for young people in the region.
Education has also featured prominently in Letoo’s community work. Through his foundation, the journalist has supported students from vulnerable backgrounds and participated in education empowerment initiatives. His involvement in education has allowed him to establish relationships with families and young people across the constituency.
Letoo will contest the Kilgoris parliamentary seat on an ODM ticket.
The journalist has previously used social media posts and public appearances to hint at his association with broad-based political networks.
At the August 29 rally, several prominent politicians appeared alongside him, signalling the level of political support surrounding his entry into the race.
Those present included Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and prominent political figure Farouk Kibet. Fellow journalist Trevor Ombija, who is also seeking an elective position ahead of the 2027 elections, also attended the event.
Letoo is expected to face incumbent Julius Sunkuli, who currently represents Kilgoris Constituency in Parliament. Sunkuli returned to Parliament in the 2022 General Election after previously serving as Kilgoris MP between 1992 and 2002.
