Diani Modern Market Fully Operational

Date:

KWALE, Kenya — The Government has announced that the Diani Modern Market in Mvindeni, Kwale County, is now fully operational, describing the facility as a key milestone in the implementation of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) aimed at empowering small-scale traders and expanding local economic opportunities.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo said the market, which was commissioned by President William Ruto in May 2026, is already providing traders with a modern, secure and well-organised trading environment designed to improve business operations and increase incomes.

According to Dr. Omollo, the facility was developed by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and accommodates 219 stalls serving hundreds of traders, including fresh produce vendors, mama mboga operators and other small businesses that form the backbone of the local economy.

“The Diani Modern Market is fully operational following its commissioning by H.E. President William Ruto in May 2026, delivering a key Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda commitment to empower small-scale traders and strengthen local enterprise,” he said.

Beyond providing trading space, the market incorporates cold storage facilities, ICT spaces, mothers’ rooms, a food court and a social hall, amenities that the government says are intended to improve efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses and enhance access to markets.

Dr. Omollo said the integrated facilities are expected to create a more inclusive business environment while supporting enterprise growth and improving service delivery for traders and customers alike.

He added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is working closely with local stakeholders to ensure the facility operates in a safe, orderly and secure environment.

According to the Principal Secretary, the collaboration is aimed at safeguarding the market, supporting uninterrupted business activities and ensuring the facility continues to respond to the needs of the surrounding communities.
