FKF Puts Premier League Clubs on Notice over Unauthorised Pitchside Advertisements

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued a stern warning to clubs participating in the FKF Premier League, cautioning them against entering into private advertising deals that violate the federation’s commercial rights.

In a letter dated May 8, FKF General Secretary Harold Ndege said the federation had observed a growing trend of clubs running unauthorised pitchside advertisements—particularly through LED panels and banners—featuring brands that are not official partners of either the league or FKF.

“Some of these advertisements feature brands and entities that are not recognized commercial partners of the League or the Federation,” the letter reads in part.

The FKF reminded clubs that the Premier League is solely owned and operated by the federation, and that any advertising or sponsorship arrangements tied to league matches must be cleared through official federation channels.

“No unauthorized advertising will be permitted in stadiums during FKF Premier League matches,” FKF declared. “Only advertising provided for under existing contracts with the Federation, or those expressly approved by the Federation, will be allowed.”

The move underscores FKF’s tightening grip on the league’s commercial landscape, as it seeks to centralise and monetise branding rights.

While the federation did not name any clubs or brands, the warning is widely seen as a preemptive measure to protect its commercial agreements, particularly as competition intensifies for visibility on matchdays.

Clubs may face penalties or sanctions should they defy the directive, although FKF did not specify what disciplinary action would follow in cases of non-compliance.

This development comes as the league continues to navigate financial and operational challenges.

Several clubs rely heavily on local sponsors and matchday revenue to stay afloat—a reality that could fuel friction over FKF’s control of pitchside advertising space.

Still, FKF insists that the enforcement of advertising rights is critical to maintaining the league’s commercial integrity and securing long-term partnerships.

“We appreciate your cooperation in upholding the integrity and commercial structure of the League,” FKF concluded.
