Flooding Disrupts Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok Highway as KeNHA Issues Safety Warning

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – A key transport corridor linking the Rift Valley has been thrown into disarray after flooding and heavy silt deposits rendered parts of the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) Road impassable, disrupting both passenger travel and cargo movement.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), in a traffic advisory issued on April 16, 2026, said relentless rains had severely affected sections near Suswa, particularly around Kedong Ranch, leaving motorists stranded and sections of the road unsafe.

Emergency response teams have since been deployed to the affected areas, working around the clock to clear debris and restore access. However, the authority warned that conditions remain dangerous, with floodwaters and deep silt posing a serious threat to vehicles.

Motorists have been strongly cautioned against attempting to cross flooded sections, amid fears of cars being swept away or getting stuck.

The stretch between Naivasha ICD and Suswa Ranch has been flagged as especially hazardous, with drivers urged to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue pounding the region.

For those yet to travel, KeNHA is advising a complete reroute, recommending the use of the Narok–Njoro–Nakuru (B18) Road to avoid delays and potential danger.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all road users and to restore normal traffic flow as soon as possible,” the authority said, noting that traffic marshals and police officers have been deployed on the ground to guide motorists.

The Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok corridor remains a critical link in the region’s transport network, and the ongoing disruption is expected to have ripple effects on movement across the Rift Valley.

Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall persists, raising concerns that road conditions could deteriorate further.
