BONDO, Kenya – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i on Monday led a delegation of leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties to condole with the family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at their Opoda Farm home in Bondo, Siaya County.
The delegation, which included current and former elected leaders from the larger Gusii region, met with Mama Ida Odinga and other family members to offer their sympathies following Raila’s death in India last week.
“I am on my way to the Odinga family home in Bondo to offer my heartfelt condolences to Mama Ida and the family on the loss of her beloved husband and one of Kenya’s greatest sons, the former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” Matiang’i said before their visit.
Among those who accompanied him were former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and former senators Prof. Sam Ongeri and Chris Obure. Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo was also part of the delegation.
Speaking after the visit, Gisairo said the leaders pledged to uphold the ideals Raila championed throughout his political life.
“Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga exemplified the values of democracy, good governance, and grassroots development. In his honour, we remain committed to fighting for functional systems and accountable leadership in our nation,” he said.

The visit, observers noted, also reflected growing unity among Gusii leaders, with Matiang’i increasingly being mentioned as a potential contender in the 2027 presidential race.
The Gusii delegation joins a long list of dignitaries and groups who have visited the Odinga family since Raila’s burial.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta paid his respects at both Opoda Farm and Kang’o ka Jaramogi, a day after the state funeral that drew national and international attention.
Other groups, including the Council of Governors, ODM leaders from the Nyanza region, family friends, and even members of the Kenyan branch of English Premier League club Arsenal, have also visited the family to convey their condolences.
Raila Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India, was buried within 72 hours of his death in line with his wishes.
President William Ruto accorded him a state funeral with full military honours as the nation observed seven days of mourning.
