NAIROBI, Kenya- DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has challenged President William Ruto to demonstrate his commitment to fighting political violence by dismissing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo.
Gachagua made the remarks on Wednesday, August 26, while speaking to journalists at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) before departing for the United States.
“If you’re serious about dealing with goons, you must sack Murkomen and Raymond Omollo because they are the planners and financiers of goons in the country,” Gachagua said.
His remarks came after Ruto warned political leaders against financing or organising groups to cause violence and vowed to take action against those involved in political disorder.
Ruto spoke during a tour of Emurua Dikirr, where an incident of attack associated with goons was witnessed.
Gachagua said he welcomed the President’s declaration but challenged him to follow it with concrete action against officials he accused of facilitating the activities.
“Now that the President has said he will personally take care of the goons, I trust that it will now be done,” he said.
He went further, saying that failure by the government to stop the goon networks would raise questions about who was responsible.
“If it does not happen, then it means he is the one behind the goons, or he must resign as President,” Gachagua said.
The former deputy president also sarcastically questioned why Murkomen had not advised Ruto against attending areas where groups accused of causing political unrest could be present.
“I don’t know why Murkomen did not advise him not to go where goons are,” he said.
Gachagua’s accusations against Murkomen and Omollo are not new.
In recent months, he has repeatedly accused the two senior Interior officials of being involved in the organisation of groups allegedly used to disrupt opposition political activities.
Gachagua is a victim of political violence, including while attending church services.
Murkomen has, in turn, warned politicians against hiring or deploying goons, saying security agencies had intensified intelligence operations to identify and arrest individuals planning violence before it occurs.
Omollo has also urged young people not to allow themselves to be used in political violence.
The DCP leader has positioned his US trip as part of his wider political and diaspora engagement strategy as opposition forces continue consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.
