Government MPs Say Gachagua Is Bitter Over Impeachment After Brutal #RutoAt4 Scorecard

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Government-aligned MPs have accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of using his attacks on President William Ruto and the administration to settle political scores following his impeachment and removal from office in 2024.

The latest criticism came on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as Gachagua stepped up his attacks on the Ruto administration while delivering what he described as a four-year accountability and performance audit of the Kenya Kwanza government.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah was among the leaders who hit back at Gachagua, describing him as “heartless, reckless, careless, and malicious” and accusing the former deputy president of lacking integrity.

The Kikuyu MP said Gachagua’s political rhetoric was driven by personal interests, as the former deputy president seeks to position himself as a leading opposition figure ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The accusations come nearly two years after Gachagua was removed from office through an impeachment process that began in the National Assembly in October 2024.

The impeachment motion secured 281 votes in the National Assembly before the matter proceeded to the Senate.

Gachagua has since become one of the most vocal critics of President Ruto, with his Democratic Party of Kenya (DCP) positioning itself as part of the political opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.

In his Tuesday address, Gachagua accused the Ruto administration of failing to honour its 2022 election promises and declared that the government’s “THE PLAN” had failed.

He also criticised the administration over the economy, public debt, taxation, healthcare, education, agriculture and governance.

The former Deputy President further demanded public inquests into several high-profile deaths, including those of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, former Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and former Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla.

Government supporters have increasingly sought to portray Gachagua’s criticism of the administration as part of a political campaign rather than an objective assessment of government performance.

However, Gachagua maintains that his criticism is based on the government’s record and has repeatedly framed his opposition to Ruto as an accountability campaign ahead of the 2027 election.

The political confrontation comes as both camps intensify mobilisation ahead of the August 2027 General Election, with Gachagua pushing the “WANTAM” campaign against President Ruto.
