NYAMIRA, Kenya — The government has warned politicians against recruiting criminal gangs or exploiting young people to intimidate political opponents and disrupt public gatherings, saying those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
Speaking during an interdenominational prayer service and fundraiser for 331 church choirs in Nyamira County, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo said political competition must remain peaceful and should never be driven by violence or criminality.
He urged young people not to allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians pursuing personal interests, stressing that leadership contests should be decided through democratic elections rather than intimidation.
“If you do not support a particular leader, wait for the elections and exercise your democratic right. Violence, intimidation and criminal gangs have no place in our politics,” Omollo said.
The Principal Secretary commended residents of Nyamira for maintaining peace and resisting organised criminal groups, saying the county should serve as a model of peaceful political engagement where leaders and citizens can express differing opinions without fear or disruption.
He directed the County Commissioner, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) and security agencies to work closely with local leaders and communities to preserve peace, prevent politically instigated violence and ensure that public meetings are conducted without interference.
Omollo also announced that the government has operationalised additional administrative units in Nyamira County to improve access to public services.
He encouraged qualified applicants to apply for the recently advertised Chief and Assistant Chief positions, saying effective grassroots administration remains essential to strengthening security, improving service delivery and supporting community development.
The Principal Secretary further urged Kenyans to reject leaders who promote ethnic and religious divisions, saying the government’s investments in infrastructure and public services are intended to benefit all citizens regardless of their backgrounds.
He cited ongoing investments in roads, education, healthcare and employment opportunities as part of efforts to promote national unity and inclusive socio-economic development.
The event brought together senior government officials, religious leaders and local leaders, including Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, President’s Adviser Farouk Kibet, legislators, elders and residents from Nyamira, Kisii and neighbouring counties.
