Grade 9 Student Arrested after Death of Classmate in Migori

Date:

MIGORI, Kenya – Police in Migori County are holding a 17-year-old Grade 9 student suspected of fatally hacking his classmate following a dispute over learning materials at a junior secondary school in Uriri Sub-county.

The suspect, a student at Akonjo Junior Secondary School, allegedly attacked his 17-year-old classmate on the evening of July 22, 2026, as the victim walked home from school.

The attack followed a disagreement earlier that day over learning materials after the suspect accused the deceased of interfering with his locker.

Kamgundho Location Chief Samuel Onjiko apprehended the suspect and handed him over to officers at Uriri Police Station, where he remains in custody pending arraignment on murder charges.

According to the chief, investigators believe the suspect deliberately skipped afternoon classes after the lunch break to plan the attack. The assault was carried out later that evening as the victim made his way home.

The injured student was rushed to Migori Level Four Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His body has been moved to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about school safety and conflict resolution among students, particularly in junior secondary schools following the roll-out of the Competency-Based Curriculum.

Police continue with investigations into the incident as the suspect awaits his day in court.
